Tetris Effect: Connected offers up impressive multiplayer variety

When a horizontal row is completed it disappears, and the rest of pieces fall one position. As we increase our level, the pieces will be released faster, and the difficulty grows. The game developers created the oddly-shaped block pieces to fit each other perfectly.

This one introduced the beloved Tanooki Suit, the concept of a stored inventory and a multi-path overworld, all bolstered by standard-setting level design. I was fearing a slight degree of input lag but the controls feel perfectly responsive and tight. A good litmus test is Ghosts ‘N Goblins where you need to react instantly to zombies that burrow up from the ground beneath. As a reviewer I feel like I could use these versions to review the original games without compromising the experience. The front of the system has a power button, a reset button, and a handy power light.

You can download any version of the app directly from third-party websites. They may have app archives of most versions and you can download the one you may need. Fortunately, the game gives you a lot of option for dishing out punishment, as there are a ton of different objects scattered around the world that can be picked up and used as weapons. With Galaga and Gradius already representing the space shooter genre, there really isn’t a place for Life Force among the NES Classic’s 30 games, but if this ends up changing, it deserves heavy consideration. Hudson Soft’s 1991 sequel to the original Adventure Island built on the first game’s somewhat rudimentary platforming gameplay by adding an inventory system and adding the ability to collect and ride dinosaurs. In other words, Adventure Island II is a sequel that gets its priorities straight. While it may not spin the most compelling of yarns, Adventure Island II is an excellent NES platformer that often gets overlooked. A spot on the NES Classic’s library would help change that.

Performance and Features

This is heavily added by the implementation of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, letting you tetris classic online play with up to three other Tetris fanatics from around the world. Touch Mode feels like a different game than Tetris and is one of this reviewer’s personal favorites. The classic Tetris action is all here, complete with an updated graphical look and feel. Tetris DS and Metroid Prime Hunters launch on March 20 and many more games with Wi-Fi compatibility are in the works. What I’ve Played

The most interesting mode–this game’s crown jewel–is the eponymous Connected co-op mode, where three players collectively try to outlast a series of AI opponents, one at a time. Once a week, there’s also an asynchronous Connected Versus mode, where players can spar 3-on-1. In addition to Zone Battle, Connected also has two versions of Score Attack, a more traditional competitive mode without garbage-line or zone mechanics. In standard Score Attack, you play for the high score and survival.

Despite renewed interest in the game from a much younger generation, Tetris is still somewhat of a fringe esport. You’ll find games featured on ESPN and it has obviously been growing in popularity, but prize pools remain modest compared to more popular games like Counter-Strike or League of Legends. “I predict that in, maybe it’s this year, maybe it’s in five years, but sometime very soon, everyone’s always going to max out on level 28.
